IOS 6.1 info on last post

iOS6 info

iOS 6 is, of course, compatible with the iPhone 5, which goes on sale Friday; it can be also installed on last year's iPhone 4S, 2010's iPhone 4 and even the iPhone 3GS, now three years old. Also supported: the fourth and fifth generation iPod Touch, the iPad 2 and the Retina display iPad released in March. Not all models support all features, however. For instance, the iPhone 3GS may be able to run apps written for iOS 6, but it won't suddenly get access to Siri, which the Retina display iPad does. Outside the U.S., not all features are supported; Apple has information here about each feature by region.

3D Flyovers are one of the hallmark features of Apple's iOS 6 Maps, combining overhead images with three-dimensional geometry to allow users to view and interact with major cities in new and unique ways. But the 3D mapping data also has considerable flaws that led to distorted views of major landmarks like the Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty, Hoover Dam and other sites.

As Apple has caught flak for iOS 6 Maps, Google has not sat by idly. The company recently introduced new satellite imagery taken at a 45-degree angle to better compete with Flyover, while Google also made its popular Street View feature available in the Safari Web browser on iPhone and iPad.

Google is also said to be working on a standalone Google Maps application that would be made available for download in the iOS App Store. However, that software is not expected to arrive until later this year at the earliest.

Apple update 6.01 fixes

Apple on Thursday issued iOS 6.0.1 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, a minor update that addresses a number of small bugs, including a screen glitch that would appear with the onscreen keyboard and an issue that would cause the camera flash to not go off.

iOS 6.0.1 is now available to download through the system's Software Update, or through iTunes. The full list of changes included in the software, according to Apple, are:
  • Fixes a bug that prevents iPhone 5 from installing software updates wirelessly over the air.
  • Fixes a bug where horizontal lines may be displayed across the keyboard.
  • Fixes an issue that could cause camera flash to not go off.
  • Improves reliability of iPhone 5 and iPod touch (5th generation) when connected to encrypted WPA2 Wi-Fi networks.
  • Resolves an issue that prevents iPhone from using the cellular network in some instances.
  • Consolidated the Use Cellular Data switch for iTunes Match.
  • Fixes a Passcode Lock bug which sometimes allowed access to Passbook pass details from lock screen.
  • Fixes a bug affecting Exchange meetings.

About iOS 6.1.3 Software Update

This update contains improvements and bug fixes, including:
  • Fixes a bug that could allow someone to bypass the passcode and access the Phone app
  • Improvements to Maps in Japan

Apple has patched a handful of security vulnerabilities in iOS, including a bug that was used for the latest iPhone jailbreak tool, called Evasion. Apple iOS 6.1.3 has patches for six vulnerabilities, including the screen lock bypass bug and a flaw in WebKit that can be used to execute arbitrary code.
The release of iOS 6.1.3 constitutes a major security update for iPhone, iPod and iPad users and it's one that most users should install as soon as they can. However, for those iPhone owners who have jailbroken their devices already, installing the update will undo that process and prevent users from rolling back to the older, jailbroken state.
Perhaps the most serious vulnerability repaired in iOS 6.1.3 is the WebKit flaw, which can be used for remote code execution.
"Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. An invalid cast issue existed in the handling of SVG files. This issue was addressed through improved type checking," Apple said in its advisory.
In addition to that fix, Apple also included a patch for a known vulnerability in iOS that enables a user to bypass the PIN code lock to gain access to the device.
"A logic issue existed in the handling of emergency calls from the lock screen. This issue was addressed through improved lock state management," Apple said.
