Default How to replace house water pump

When I built my house in 1992 I put the house water pump in the garage.
This helped the pump to live as long as she did.

I was called by my Wife about a burning smell in the garage. I told my boss that I needed to clock out and head home. When I arrived and open the garage door. I smelled a very hot motor. Working in HVACR for 31 year you know that smell. The motor still ran but the amps was 7.1 when the motor plate said 5.4. I check the voltage and it was 252v and the motor is an 230v motor

So I called a good friend that rebuilds electric motors. Calling around for a new pump could cost me up to $450 to $550 to have someone come change it. So I pulled the pump. Note in the pictures below you can see I have a coupling on Discharge and there is a coupling on the suction as well. Note this makes pulling any house water pump easy. So please get couplings when installing.

1992 Goulds SJ07

1992 SJ07 could not be rebuilt. The pump housing was rusted through.
So this pump ran for 20 year without a glitch.

The new pump is a Stay Rite with a different frame motor that is more common. so if the motor goes bad say in 20 years I am good.

I had to re-pipe the discharge with adding PVC do to the pump design and I also replaced the water PSI gauges.
Total cost for pump, gauges and PVC glue $340
