A Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), technically called a STOP error, occurs when Windows suffers a serious error and is forced to "stop" completely.
Since a blue screen error gives you no choice but to restart, troubleshooting one can be difficult. Luckily, almost every STOP error includes a STOP code that can be used to research a fix.
Below are links to information on individual STOP errors including what each STOP code means and any troubleshooting information I have on that STOP error. I highly recommend checking for specific information on your particular STOP code first, but I also have some general troubleshooting on my How To Fix a Blue Screen of Death page as well.
Tip: All STOP codes below are listed in order - see How To Count in Hexadecimal for help. You may also search for the STOP code at the top of this page.

STOP Error 0x00000001 to STOP Error 0x0000005F

Complete list of STOP codes from STOP error 0x1 (0x00000001) to STOP error 0x5F (0x0000005F).

STOP Error 0xDEADDEAD: MANUALLY_INITIATED_CRASH1

STOP error 0xDEADDEAD means that the user deliberately initiated a crash dump from either the kernel debugger or the keyboard. STOP code 0xDEADDEAD may also display "MANUALLY_INITIATED_CRASH1" on the same STOP message.
Did I Miss a STOP Code?

If you've received a STOP error that I don't have the BSOD code for, please let me know! I'll add the STOP code to the appropriate list above and then publish whatever information on it that I can find.

First of all, remove all unnecessary hardware devices from the computer, try entering Windows safe mode to test whether it is a third-party software/hardware incompatibility issue. If the issue is caused by the driver updates, you might go to Device Manager, right click your hardware device in the list and select Properties; then click Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver button. In addition, you might download and run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to check the reason for the issue.

If you still get the BSOD error while booting the computer, please understand that Windows system uses separated user mode and kernel mode memory space, stop errors are always caused by kernel portion components, such as a hardware device, third-party drivers, backup software or anti-virus services (buggy services).

The system goes to a blue screen because there is some exceptions happened in the kernel (either the device driver errors or the service errors), and Windows implements this mechanism: When it detects some errors occur in the kernel, it will kill the box in case some more severe damage happens. Then we get a blue screen or the system reboots (it depends on what the system settings are).

To troubleshoot this kind of kernel crash issue, we need to debug the crashed system dump. Unfortunately, debugging is beyond what we can do in the forum. A suggestion would be to contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS) via telephone so that a dedicated Support Professional can assist with your request. Please be advised that contacting phone support will be a charged call.

To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a look at the web site listed below:

Did Microsoft just drop the Telemetry bomb on Windows 7 users without telling anyone?

Microsoft released security updates for all supported operating systems on the July 2019 Patch Day. Windows 7 administrators get to choose between a security-only update or a monthly rollup update. The main difference between the two is that security-only supposedly only contains security related patches while the monthly rollup update may also include non-security changes.

KB4507456, which is this month's security-only update, seems to have included more than just security patches for the various components of the Windows 7 operating system. According to reports, installing the security-only update replaces the notorious KB2952664, the Compatibility update for keeping Windows up-to-date and also making sure that upgrades to Windows 10 work as expected.

With the July 2019-07 Security Only Quality Update KB4507456, Microsoft has slipped this functionality into a security-only patch without any warning, thus adding the “Compatibility Appraiser” and its scheduled tasks (telemetry) to the update. The package details for KB4507456 say it replaces KB2952664 (among other updates).

The release sparked fear among some admins that Microsoft might have dropped the update in preparation of Windows 7's support end and the expected push of Windows 10 on these systems.

This is not the first time that Microsoft slipped Compatibility Appraiser into a security-only update. The company did so in September 2018 for Windows 7 but informed users and administrators about it in advance.

The July 2019 seems like a repeat of that but without the warning. Once installed, a new scheduled task is added to the system under Microsoft > Windows > Application Experience.

Ed Bott picked up the story on ZDnet confirming that the security-only update did in fact include the Compatibility Appraiser tool. Bott suggests, however, that there might be another simpler explanation for the inclusion: that the tool itself had a security issue that Microsoft fixed with the release.

Bott presents no evidence on the other hand that the update fixed security issues in the Appraiser tool. Given the lack of data, I would not be too quick to dismiss the hypothesis. For now, all we know is that Microsoft did push the update to Windows 7 devices as part of the security-only update. It could be another case of Microsoft just being Microsoft.

Communication and openness has improved in recent years at Microsoft but as Bott points out, there are still issues "where the company's stubborn silence is baffling".
